How to make so many words using a root word (Tri): (Lesson-25)

My name is Snehal and today we are going to discuss how to make so many words using a root word. From my own experience, I can assure you that you should follow this technique to remember words for a long time without making much efforts. And this technique will prove how logically words are made in English. Today’s root word is TRI. It means three and basically it is originated from Latin. So, without wasting much time, let’s dive into it.

  1. Triangle: A super simple word. Everyone knows this word. It is divided into two parts. Tri and Angle. Three angles. Therefore, the meaning of this word is a figure with three angles.
    Examples: Can you draw a triangle with your closed eyes? / A triangle is a figure which has three sides and three angles.
  2. Triennial: Something happens or occurs every three years – it is clear from the word itself.
    Examples: In order to cut down on the budget, they have decided to have a triennial summit worldwide. / The triennial meeting is called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year.
  3. Tricolor: Having three colors. Again, it’s clear from the word that something which has three different colors.
    Examples: Our flag has three colors – saffron, white and green – so it’s called tricolor. / A tricolor-ed dresses are not in demand these days.
  4. Tricycle: A vehicle with three wheels – one more time, it’s clear from the word itself.
    Examples: Kids love to play with their tricycles. / Her tricycle has been stolen.
  5. Trident: Tri means three and dent means prongs. A weapon or instrument with three prongs.
    Examples: A lot of saints keep a trident with them. / It is believed that the US has developed a trident missile last decade.
  6. Trigonometry: It is one of the branches of mathematics. Tri – three, gono – angle and metry – measure. This branch deals with the sides and angles of triangles.
    Examples: Trigonometry was my favorite subject during school days. / Leaning trigonometry was not cup of my tea – that was what I believed initially.
  7. Trio: A group of three persons.
    Examples: It was a trio – Tom, Dick and Harry. / Each of us was jealous of that trio.
  8. Triple: Its meaning is three fold.
    Examples: A few batsmen scored a triple century in cricket. / He bought one thing and got three things for free. It was a triple bonanza for him.
  9. Tripod: Pod means leg. So, tripod means having three legs. Its synonym is trivet.
    Examples: A camera was fixed on a tripod / trivet to click some high-quality photos. / A tripod / trivet was broken by him before fixing the camera.
