“Good” and “Well” – most commonly confusing words (Lesson-21)

Hello, Friends!
My name is Snehal. Today we are going to talk about two most commonly confusing words and these two words are: Good and Well. Many people use them incorrectly a lot of time. We will see how to use them correctly and at the end of this podcast, you will be confident of using them in a proper way. Therefore, without wasting much time, let’s dive into it.

GOOD is an adjective whereas WELL is an adverb – this is the most important difference between these two words. From this it is clearly concluded that GOOD goes with a noun and WELL goes with a verb. In simple words, we can say:  GOOD + NOUN AND VERB + WELL – this is the simplest formula to remember.  After seeing some sample sentences, this will clear to you.

Don’t say: This is a well T-shirt.
Say: This is a good T-shirt.

Don’t say: It was a well novel.
Say: It was a good novel.

Don’t say: She speaks English good.
Say: She speaks English well.

Don’t say: You have done really good in the exam.
Say: You have done really well in the exam.

Sometimes, people ask us: How are you? Our reply can be “I am doing well.” OR “I am doing good.”
“I am doing well” means you are doing some activities and everything is fine in that. “I am doing good” means simply you are healthy and you are not suffering from any problems.

There are some other usages of WELL. But I am not going to cover all them here otherwise this podcast would be really very lengthy. You can go through my blog in order to learn some more about the usages of WELL. I hope you enjoyed today’s podcast. You can find the written description of the podcast here in the description segment. I will see you tomorrow. Till then bye and take care!
